Our Resolutions for 2018

The year begins, it’s time for dreams, challenges and resolutions to carry out in the next 365 days ahead of us. At Libros de las Malas Compañías (Bad Crowd Books) we could not be less, and we also have our own.

To whet your appetite, we are finishing the edition of Los cuentos del conejo, y otros cuentos de la gente albima de Mozambique (Rabbit tales and other stories of the albino people of Mozambique), the third book in the Serie Negra (Black Series) collection, the result of the compilation and illustration work with albino people, carried out in September 2017 by Ana Cristina Herreros and Daniel Tornero.

In March, we will publish this beautiful book that aims to show that these black people with white skin are not spirits (because they tell stories). The profits from its sale will support an occupational centre for albino women in Matola, as we usually do with the books in this Serie Negra.

In March, La boda de los ratones (the wedding of the mice), written by Margarita del Mazo will also be published in the Rescatados (Rescued) collection. It is about a little mouse who wants to get married, but her father thinks that mice are all low-life animals, so he is looking for the best husband for his daughter.

In October, we will publish the second book of the collection “La gente también cuenta” (People are also important), which this year is dedicated to HOMELESS people, with the winning illustrated album of the contest La gente sin hogar también cuenta (Homeless people are also important), which we will soon be announcing. But this year, in addition, we will also have a short story and a photography competition. With the best short stories and the best photos we will make an e-book and all the profits from the downloads will be donated to a project that works with homeless people: paupers or refugees.

In October, we will also publish Cuentos prohibidos noruegos (Forbidden Norwegian Tales) compiled by Asbjornsen & Moe and translated from Norwegian by Mariano Gonzalez. This book will be in the collection Cuentos Antiguos (Ancient Tales) and contains 50 erotic tales that Asbjornsen & Moe collected in a country that did not exist, Norway, at the beginning of the 19th century, and which they hid due to their highly erotic content. This year we are rescuing them and publishing them together with the engravings from the period.

In addition to these four great resolutions for 2018, we are working to publish several titles this year:

La rata que nunca fue presumida (The true story of the mouse who never asked for it), written by Ana Cristina Herreros, within the Libros Crecederos (Growing books) collection. It is the story of a rat who doesn’t buy a bow but a cabbage to make a house for herself. It is the story of a little mouse who marries a limpy cat, a very good husband, but a cat nonetheless…

El pequeño pez rojo (the little red fish), written by Shamad Beranghi, within the Libros Crecederos collection. Is the story of a little red fish who dreams of the sea and sets out his journey. On his trip, he will meet beings he doesn’t know but, above all, he will learn that important thing is not reaching the goal but to help those you meet along the way.

El padre Orco (Father Orc), written by Ana Cristina Herreros, within the Libros Crecederos collection. Pietrino has to bring food to Father Orc, but he is so hungry that he eats it on the way. It occurs to him to replace what he has eaten with what he finds along the way. And off he goes, to avoid being eaten, armed with the only thing that defeat monsters: intelligence and humour.

Postales de África (Postcards from Africa), 50 African or Afro-descendant women writers will put their words to the 50 postcards found in the collection of a Spanish diplomat in the 1940s. 50 women offer us their vision of a magical and diverse continent. It will be part of the Caprichos (Caprices) collection.

We will keep you posted with more news.

Thank you very much for joining us in 2018 in this adventure of making necessary books.
