II Illustrated Album Contest

People tell stories too

RULES

  1. Participants. All people, writers and illustrators of legal age who, regardless of their place of origin or residence, present work in Spanish will be eligible for the II Illustrated Album Contest "Homeless People".

  2. Originality. The contest will accommodate album book projects based on an original narrative and visual conception. Album books are understood as works composed of text and images or exclusively of images.

  3. Unpublished. The works will be strictly unpublished. Works submitted simultaneously to another contest may not participate either.

  4. Publishing and Copyright. The prize of this contest is the publication of the illustrated album. Copyright will be 4% for the author, 4% for the illustrator and 2% for the homeless through the organization that seems most competent to us.

  5. Deadline. The deadline for receiving the works in the competition will be from March 23, 2018, the date on which the call will be made public, until June 23, 2018. The works will be presented anonymously (as stated in Rule nº 8) and will be sent to Libros de las Malas Compañías, PO Box 8448, 28080 Madrid, clearly indicating on the outside of the envelope “ILLUSTRATED ALBUM CONTEST Homeless people tell stories too”. The date of submission will be taken into account both in the certified shipment and by courier. The authors will bear the shipping costs of the works.

  6. Extension. The proposed work will have a maximum length of 36 pages (18 double pages), not counting the legal pages, title page, guards or cover. The format will be 25 x 25, although other format proposals will be taken into account, as long as they are economically viable. Unique binding proposals will also be accepted as long as they can be produced industrially.

  7. Presentation. Contestants must submit two copies of the double-spaced written text, one high-resolution reproduction, and two colour photocopies of three original illustrations. A mock-up of the complete album will be included where the location of the illustrations presented and the text can be appreciated, as well as the rest of the illustrations that must appear at least sketched.

  8. Anonymity. In the works presented, the name of the authors will not appear at any time, but rather a motto or pseudonym. The personal data of the participants will be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which the title of the work and the motto or pseudonym will be indicated, and on the inside, the full name, address, contact telephone number will be stated and it will be included a photocopy of the DNI or passport and a brief biographical note.

  9. Jury. The jury will be made up of five members: the winners of the previous edition, the editor of Libros de las Malas Compañías and two people from groups that work with homeless people. The Secretariat, with voice but no vote, will be appointed by the Libros de las Malas Compañías. The composition of this jury will be published on the website www.librosdelasmalascompanias.com/concurso without prejudice to other means that, where appropriate, are deemed appropriate, at least 10 calendar days before the date of its meeting and decision. If the number of works presented prevents the deadlines established in these rules from being met, the publishing house Libros de las Malas Compañías may set up a prior selection committee, to facilitate the work of the Jury.

  10. Selection criteria. The selection of the winning work will meet the following criteria: a) The work that best collects and brings up the underlying theme that is addressed in this edition. In the 2018 edition  “HOMELESS people tell stories too.” b) The best narrative conception text/images. c) The originality and literary quality of its content. d) The harmony achieved in the text/image presentation.

  11. Jury decision and book presentation. The jury's decision will be final and will be made public on July 5, 2018. The presentation of the book will take place on November 28 on the occasion of HOMELESS DAY. Non-awarded works will not be returned.

  12. The signing of the contract. Once the ruling has been made public, the author or, as the case may be, authors of the winning work will sign a publication contract with Libros de las Malas Compañías under the same conditions established by the publisher for its publications, which will include a minimum edition of 1000 copies. The author must present the work in conditions for its publication, including the making of the definitive illustrations with the same style and the same quality as those presented in the contest; all this within a maximum period of 2 months from the jury's decision. The author will work in collaboration with Libros de las Malas Compañías to achieve the optimal materialization of the album, which will be published and presented on November 28 after the contest is announced.

  13. Use of images. The Libros de las Malas Compañías publishing house is authorized to use, non-profit, the images of the winning book for its promotion and that of the contest itself.

  14. Acceptance of the rules. Participation in this contest implies full acceptance of the rules.
