Literacy course with women in Lower Casamance, Senegal

Good morning, as we told you last week, today is #GivingTuesday and this year, we wanted to promote the solidarity project that goes together with our book of the Serie Negra (Black series), “El dragon que se comió el sol y otros cuentos de la Baja Casamance” ("The dragon that ate the sun and other tales from Lower Casamance").

It is a project that has been running since 2015, where women from Oussouye, a village in Lower Casamance in Senegal, have the opportunity to learn to read at the Teba Diatta library. This literacy course is possible thanks to the profits we make from the sale of the Black series’ book, so every reader who has bought this book has provided every material and every hour that the teacher has dedicated to his students.

Of course, in addition to the help of the readers, this project would not have been possible without the help of Fina Hernández, our “baddest” companion, a friend and teacher who has been living between Spain and Senegal for the last 4 years and who is in charge of coordinating the project from Oussouye.

Thanks to her, we can tell you that this year, in addition to learning to read and write, women are studying calculus. They started classes on 4 November and have a lot to do until June. In February a group of volunteers arrived with new calculus and writing booklets.

From Oussouye we have received the last photos of the beginning of the course, we hope you enjoy them because this is possible thanks to you.

Finally, we would like to tell you that all the books of the Black series are accompanied by a solidary project with which you can collaborate with the purchase of this book, which you can find in any bookshop in Spain or through our online shop.

Thank you very much to all of you.
